Why households are getting ready

The government now asks every home to be ready for 72 hours.

Storms, flooding, power cuts and cyber attacks on the systems we rely on can all leave a home without power, water or phone signal for days. The Cabinet Office's Be Ready campaign asks every household to keep enough at home to look after itself for three days.

Most of us haven't got round to it. Working out what to buy, finding it, and then remembering to check the dates is the hard part. We've done that for you.

13%

of UK households say they are largely or totally prepared for an emergency.

4%

have three days of drinking water at home. 82% have less than a day.

23%

own a battery, solar or wind up FM radio for official updates when the power is off.

Three boxes

Pick the box that fits your home.

Every box covers the government checklist: light, information, first aid, warmth, hygiene, food and water, plus a printed guide and a card for your medication and important numbers. The three boxes hold the same kit, sized for one, two or four people, so choosing is simple.

Optional extras

Add any of these to your box. They're packed in the same parcel at no extra delivery cost.

What's inside

Matched line by line to the Be Ready checklist.

We started with the government's three day checklist and chose things that are simple to use, last a long time in a cupboard and don't need a gas cooker or a phone signal. Nothing needs assembling. Open the box and you're ready.

Light

An LED torch for each person, with spare batteries. Head torches and a lantern are optional extras. The government advises torches rather than candles, which cause house fires.

Information

A battery FM radio, so you can hear official updates when there's no power, mobile signal or internet. Every box comes with a full set of spare batteries.

Batteries and power

Spare AA and AAA batteries for every radio and torch, sealed in their packs. An emergency phone charger that runs on AA batteries, or a wind up radio that charges phones, can be added as extras.

First aid

A sealed first aid kit, plus a card to list your medication, doses and the numbers you'd need if your phone dies.

Food

5 year food rations that need no cooking: 2,500 calories, enough for one person for three days, in every box for every person.

Water

Sealed 5 year drinking water pouches, a litre for each person, plus purification tablets, and a collapsible 10 litre carrier in the Family and Complete boxes.

Warmth and hygiene

Foil blankets, hand warmers and a poncho for each person, hand sanitiser and wet wipes. A fleece throw is an optional extra.

Morale

A deck of cards, UNO in the bigger boxes and a few bags of Haribo. Three days indoors goes quicker with something to do.

Who it's for

Most of our boxes are bought for someone else.

For a parent who lives alone

The Essential box was designed with older people in mind. A simple battery radio with three controls, a torch for the bedside, warmth, a large print guide and a card for medication and contacts. Send it straight to their door with a gift message.

We include a reminder to join their energy and water company's free Priority Services Register, which the government recommends for anyone who would need extra help in a power cut.

For a family home

The Family box covers two people for three days: a radio, a torch each, food and water for both of you, a water carrier and a game of UNO for the long evenings.

For bigger households

The Complete box covers four people for three days, with a larger first aid kit. If you're at the end of a line that goes down every winter, add a lantern and a wind up radio.

Kept in date

We remember the dates, so you don't have to.

A quarter of people who know they should prepare say they hold back because supplies might go out of date. Every box comes with a dated contents card, and we keep a record of what's in yours.

  1. Your box arrives with a contents card showing the shelf life of every item.
  2. We email you each November, at the start of storm season, with a two minute check list.
  3. When something is coming up to its date, we offer a refill pack with just the items you need.

Questions

Good to know before you order.

Is this an official government kit?

No. Resilience UK is an independent business. We built our boxes around the items on the government's Be Ready checklist at beready.campaign.gov.uk, but we are not affiliated with or endorsed by the government.

Does the box include all the water we need?

The government suggests 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, so about 9 litres each for three days. That is too heavy to post sensibly, so every box includes a litre of sealed 5 year water per person and purification tablets, and the Family and Complete boxes add a collapsible 10 litre carrier. Our printed guide shows the simplest way to keep bottled water at home and rotate it with your weekly shop.

How long will everything last?

The food rations and water pouches last 5 years from manufacture and batteries about 10 years in storage. Every item's date is printed on your contents card. We email you before anything is due and offer a refill pack with only what you need.

Can I send a box to someone else?

Yes. Add their address at checkout and a gift message. We don't put a price in the box. The Essential box includes a large print guide and a card for their medication and important numbers.

What about allergies and special diets?

The food rations contain wheat and may contain traces of milk and soya. Haribo contains gelatine. Tell us in the order notes and we will suggest a swap where we can. Full allergen details come printed with each box.

Will I get exactly the brands shown?

Every box contains the items listed, but brands can vary with stock. If a brand isn't available we use an equivalent of the same or better specification. Optional extras marked "while stock lasts" are refunded in full within 24 hours if we can't supply them.

When will my box arrive?

Your box is shipped within 48 hours of your order, by Royal Mail Tracked 48, which aims to deliver in 2 to 3 working days after that. Delivery is £7.95 to UK mainland addresses and free on orders over £250. For the Scottish Highlands and islands, Northern Ireland and BFPO please contact us first.

Can I return it?

You can cancel within 14 days of delivery and return the box unused for a refund. For health and hygiene reasons we can't take back food, water, first aid or hygiene items once their seals are opened. Anything faulty or damaged, we will replace.

Do you supply businesses, landlords and care providers?

Yes. We can pack boxes for offices, letting portfolios, schools and care settings, with your own contents card and reminder schedule. Email us and we'll quote.
